Met 12-year-old Gannon Troutman, skipper of the J/70 Pied Piper, this morning. Gannon is believed to be the youngest skipper in Key West history. Samual “Shark” Kahn skippered a Melges 24 when he was 14 years old. I’ve been publicist down here for 20 years and can’t remember a younger skipper than age 12. Can you?
Got an opportunity this morning to do a quick interview with Paul Cayard, a member of the National Sailing Hall of Fame. Cayard is a tremendous ambassador for the sport and a living legend. Very cool to catch up with Paul, who is tactician aboard the mini maxi Shockwave.
Three of the best sailors in the world are tacticians in IRC 1. Two-time Rolex Yachtsman of the Year Terry Hutchinson on Bella Mente, Volvo Ocean Race winning skipper Paul Cayard on Shockwave and four-time America’s Cup champion Brad Butterworth on Numbers.
It’s been fun walking the docks the last three days, checking out the boats and talking to sailors. Going to be a fun week. Can’t wait for racing to get underway.
